In Their Own Words

We Love Shortwave

These students attend Panchayat Union Middle School in Vedaraniam, India, a “small town” of about 100,000 people. They speak Tamil at home and at school. In order to learn English, their teacher – named “Ragu A.” – introduced them to shortwave radio. The students enjoy tuning in to English-learning programs, and they have detected signals from as far away as Australia and the United States. After school, they like to “make dolls from palm leaves, stitch clothes, wind plastic baskets, and attend temple ceremonies.” The boys and girls say they want to be many things when they grow up: “pilots, chemists, engineers, politicians, astronomers, TV programmers, teachers, and more.” They declare, “We love shortwave. It is the shortest way to reach English.” At AWR, we hope that in time they will also reach Jesus and learn to love Him too.
