In Their Own Words

Thanksgiving in East Africa

AWR’s broadcasts are heard in every setting imaginable, from remote hillside huts in Tibet and Internet cafes in the Middle East, to the mansion of an imam in Africa. We receive letters from a surprising number of soldiers, both current and former, as well as prison inmates. The following story comes from a listener who is currently living in Ethiopia.

“I am a former fighter. I fought for Eritrean independence for more than 15 years, but I resigned after the day of independence and started to work privately.

“But life was not smooth, because there was a battle between the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments. Therefore, I spent four years and 10 months in prison. There I met Jesus personally by reading His holy book. I also listened to the AWR radio programs.

“Then the Holy Spirit did His work step by step. I stopped smoking and started to pray. I also organized a prayer group inside my cell. Later on, I was released from prison and was baptized. Now I am a ministry leader in my local church, and I am also visiting prisoners every Sunday.

“Please pray for me to serve my Lord more. God bless you exceedingly! Your brother in Christ, Haile Kebebew.”
